ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Skill, Experience)
-Graduate of an approved Medical Dictatypist or Medical Secretarial program of a community college or equivalent.
-Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, and pharmacology.
-Demonstrated knowledge of computers and use of software.
-Minimum of two years experience of medical dictatyping in a Laboratory department preferred.
ESSENTIAL COMPETENCIES (Personal Skills and Attributes)
-Demonstrated proficiency of transcribing medical dictation.
-Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology.
-Competent in Computer PC operation.
-Excellent keyboarding skills.
-Ability to concentrate with keen attention to detail.
-Ability to interact and communicate with individuals and external customers in a courteous, co-operative and professional manner.
-Ability to prioritize and respond effectively to changing workload demands.
-Flexibility to meet operational requirement, including hours of work and locations.
-Strong team player with the ability to perform duties independently and professionally.
-Shows initiative in identifying key issues and takes a logical, responsible approach to problem solving.

ACCOUNTABILITIES (Major Responsibilities of the Position)
-Transcribes medical dictation using a computer in accordance with established procedures.
-To be proficient in the operation of the Laboratory data management system (Pathways Lab) at the authorization level assigned.
-Distributes lab charts to appropriate areas/persons.
-Maintain an appropriate filing system.
-Orders and maintains office supplies (as authorized).
-Responsible for training of new staff as required.
-Participates in department continuing education as required.
-Performs general reception duties.
-Interact with physicians, staff, and visitors in a courteous and efficient manner.
-Maintains accuracy while achieving the standard of performance for the area.
-Participates in performing other departmental functions or projects as assigned by the Manager of Laboratory Services or Charge Technologists.
-Responds to requests for patient information according to legislation and department procedures.
